Tom Crean Christmas Podcast Event:

Christmas Songs???????
I haven't had a special event on my podcast in a long time so....
I've decided to for this December to play all Christmas songs.
This was brought on by my girlfriend's constant question for me: "Why
don't you like Christmas music?" Well after being asked this a
few times, I really started to think "why don't I enjoy Christmas
music?"
I think Christmas music may be the most sacred music in American
culture for most people who celebrate the holiday. Reinterpreting
the songs that make up this cannon, is generally not well
received. Most people just want to hear the songs exactly the way
they know them. For me as a performer this is highly
unsatisfactory. This led to my distaste of "Christmas music."
I do not consider myself religious at all. I celebrate Christmas,
but not the religious aspect of the holiday. My memories of
Christmas from my childhood were the Grinch and Rudolf. I am more
familiar with "corporate Christmas" then the religious
holiday. I am putting that on the table for those who don't
know, I want to be clear about my understanding of the holiday.
These versions of "Christmas songs" are reinterpreted how i want.
I have no interest in playing these songs the way you might have heard
them before. This is an attempt at reinvention of a tradition of
music in which reinvention is discouraged.
